When Does an On-Site Veterinary Visit Make Sense?

With many exotic species, their surroundings can tell us almost as much as the animals themselves.

A flock-wide problem may point toward something happening in the coop. Health concerns affecting several reptiles could relate to shared husbandry or environmental conditions. Changes among pond fish may call for a closer look at their water and habitat.

By coming to you, our veterinary team can assess the bigger picture instead of evaluating an animal separately from the environment in which the concern developed.

House calls may be particularly helpful when there are:

  • Multiple animals experiencing similar symptoms
  • Concerns affecting an entire flock or collection
  • Husbandry or environmental questions
  • Recurring health problems among several animals
  • Animals that would be difficult or impractical to transport individually

What Animals Do We See Through Veterinary House Calls?

Availability depends on the circumstances, number of animals involved, location, and veterinary needs of the group.

Chicken Flocks

When several chickens are involved, examining the flock on-site can provide valuable context. Our veterinarians can evaluate the birds along with their coop, run, feeding setup, sanitation practices, and other factors that may be contributing to a flock-wide concern.

Large Reptile Collections

Transporting a significant reptile collection can be stressful for the animals and challenging for the people caring for them.

We may offer on-site appointments for breeders, keepers, and others responsible for larger reptile collections. These visits can allow our veterinarian to assess multiple animals while reviewing enclosure temperatures, humidity, UVB lighting, nutrition, sanitation, and other husbandry considerations.

House calls are generally intended for substantial collections rather than a single pet reptile. Individual reptiles can be seen at our Bedford Hills hospital.

Indoor & Outdoor Fish Populations

When something changes in an aquarium or pond, the surrounding environment deserves attention too.

Our veterinary team can provide house calls for qualifying indoor aquariums and outdoor fish ponds, allowing us to evaluate the fish within their existing setup. Depending on the concern, we may assess the population along with factors such as water conditions, filtration, stocking, habitat, and husbandry.

Bees & Apiaries

Honeybee health is evaluated at the colony level, which makes an on-site visit especially useful. During an apiary house call, our veterinarian may assess colony strength, brood patterns, queen performance, signs of pests or disease, nutrition, hive conditions, and other factors that could be affecting the health of the bees.

We can also work with beekeepers when veterinary oversight is needed for certain treatments or when a colony is experiencing unexplained losses, poor productivity, or other ongoing concerns.

Each visit looks a little different because a backyard chicken flock and a reptile breeding collection have very different needs.

Is My Exotic Pet Eligible for a House Call?

House calls are offered selectively and are not intended to replace in-hospital appointments for every exotic pet.

Eligibility depends on factors such as the species, number of animals, reason for the visit, location, and whether examining the animals in their home environment would benefit the veterinary assessment.

For example, we may travel to evaluate a sizeable reptile collection but generally would not schedule a house call for one pet reptile. Similarly, flock, pond, aquarium, and colony visits are considered based on the individual circumstances. The easiest way to find out is to give us a call.
